The hand knitted Madigan Aisling Cashmere Cardigan makes beautiful use of the cable, plait and lobster claw stitches, combining them in a distinctive, textured panel that elegantly frames a central block of cosy blackberry stitch.
Each of these stitches has a meaning associated with it - the lobster claw and blackberry stitches both pay tribute to the natural riches of the Aran Islands, representing the lobsters that formed part of the daily catch of the fishermen, and the abundant blackberry bushes in the islands’ hedgerows. The cable stitches symbolise the ropes used by the fishermen, while the plait recalls similar Celtic motifs that appear on ancient high stone crosses.
Finally, moss stitch is used to complete the sides and sleeves of the cardigan. Symbolic of the carrageen moss that grows between the stones of traditional hand-built walls on the islands, it adds the perfect final flourish to this one of- a-kind handmade garment.
Each Madigan Aran sweater is made to order by hand in Ireland and takes approx. 6 weeks to complete.
Since every Madigan Aran sweater is made to order and individually knitted by hand, you’ll notice that each element has a definition and fullness that simply can’t be found in mass-produced, machine-knitted sweaters.
Because of this very handmade process, each Madigan Aran sweater takes approx. 6 weeks to complete, but can vary based on our waitlist.
